Snow Joe Cordless Snow Blower Review: Is It Worth It for Small to Medium Snow Jobs? - Sebago Lake, Maine

Welcome back—making life easier, one review at a time.

Today I'm sharing my take on a winter tool that's become surprisingly essential around my lake house: the Snow Joe Cordless Snow Blower. If you live near the water, deal with regular snow, or just want winter chores to be less of a production, this one deserves a look.

This thing is light, capable, and maintenance-free—which already puts it ahead of most snow equipment I've owned.

What You Get with This Snow Joe

The model I'm using is the Snow Joe 24-Volt X2 SB15 Kit. Here's what comes with it:

  • 15-inch clearing width
  • Brushless 750-watt motor
  • Two 24-volt lithium-ion batteries
  • Dual-port charger
  • No gas, no oil, no cords

The dual-port charger charges both batteries at the same time and does so at a reasonable pace. It's not super fast, but it's fast enough for normal snow-clearing sessions without creating long downtime.

And the biggest win for me: zero maintenance. Charge the batteries, snap them in, and you're ready to go—no winter tune-ups, no fuel stabilizers, no garage drama.

Three Reasons This Snow Blower Works So Well

1. It's Light Enough to Go Everywhere (Including the Deck and the Lake)

I'll be honest: I originally bought this mainly to clean off my deck, which is pretty big.

There is absolutely no chance I'm ever carrying a full-size snow blower up onto my deck. That's just not happening. But this Snow Joe is so portable that I can carry it up the stairs without thinking twice.

Demonstrating the portability of the Snow Joe

That portability is the whole reason it works. I can move it from the driveway to the deck, across the yard, and even down to the lake without hesitation.

I'll regularly carry it across my yard to the lake to clear off ice for skating. No way I am doing that with a John Deere either—unless I want to turn ice skating into a full-blown construction project.

Sometimes I even bring it into the house, which my wife does not love because it tracks snow everywhere. So I try to avoid that… most of the time.

I can also toss it in my truck to help my buddy with his igloo-building project. Who knew I would be doing that. Again, not happening with a gas blower unless I want to rebuild my suspension afterward.

2. Perfect for Everyday Lake House Snow Jobs

Around a lake house, snow removal isn't just about the driveway.

I use this Snow Joe to:

  • Clear the deck so no one has to do the penguin shuffle
  • Cut clean walking paths around the yard
  • Create a safe path to the propane tank (my delivery guy shouldn't feel like he's on an Arctic expedition)
  • Open up access to the lake itself

We still have someone come and plow our driveway, which is pretty long. This Snow Joe handles everything else. And as a side note—if anyone needs a plow guy, I've got a great connection. Solid, reliable, and shows up when it actually snows.

Whether it's ice skating, fishing, or just hanging out by the water in winter, having quick, easy access makes a huge difference.

It's also great for giving the dogs a dedicated place to do their business—preferably not right where everyone walks. Yes, good boy. Everyone wins.

3. No Maintenance, Which Matters More in Winter

This is the real reason electric works for me.

I'm not great at maintaining gas equipment. In the summer, I forget about it. In the winter, it doesn't start. That's the cycle.

With this Snow Joe, there's no oil to change, no fuel to worry about, and no bad gas issues. The batteries charge, store easily, and that's it.

Meanwhile, my John Deere snow blower has taken on a new role in life: holding my Elvis glasses. Not an advertised feature—but surprisingly reliable.

A Quick Note on Other Options (Including EGO)

I also want to be clear that there are some excellent electric snow blower options on the market.

I'm a huge fan of EGO. I own several EGO tools and, in my opinion, they make some of the highest-quality electric outdoor equipment out there. If you're looking for a true gas replacement and want the best electric option available, EGO should absolutely be on your list.

The reason I went with Snow Joe here really came down to price. I picked this unit up at about 35% off, and I couldn't pass that up. If that deal had been reversed—or even close—I probably would've gone with EGO, especially if I already owned a couple of their batteries.

That's the big factor. If you already have EGO batteries, the value equation changes quickly.

In fact, I'll likely be in the market for an EGO snow blower at another location as I continue to add more EGO batteries. For this spot, though, Snow Joe fills the role of a supporting snowblower, delivering the right balance of quality and price.

If you want the best and are willing to invest, go EGO. If you find a great deal and want something practical for everyday use, Snow Joe makes a lot of sense.

Where This Snow Joe Is Not the Right Tool

This isn't meant to replace everything.

  • Long or steep driveways: still best handled by a plow
  • Heavy ice chunks or frozen snowbanks: not what this is designed for
  • Deep, packed snow that's been sitting for days: also not ideal

This blower is built for light to medium, powdery snow, which is what I deal with most of the time around the lake—and for that, it performs extremely well.

Final Thoughts

If you live near a lake, have decks, paths, and winter access points to manage, or just want snow removal to be easier, this Snow Joe hits a very practical sweet spot.

It's:

  • Light enough to carry anywhere—even up onto the deck or down to the lake
  • Powerful for its size (it handles up to about a foot of snow comfortably)
  • Completely maintenance-free

For decks, walkways, yard paths, lake access, and small to medium driveways, it does exactly what it promises—without adding friction to your winter routine.
